TOMMY DOUGLAS:
The Arrows of Desire

.....to the memory of a man; TOMMY DOUGLAS: The Arrows of Desire is a historic presentation, based on truth, of a Canadian legend and his living legacy.....

John Nolan

The original script, TOMMY DOUGLAS: The Arrows of Desire, was written by Canadian actor and playwright, John Nolan, following 20 years of study, research, writing, writing and rewriting as he pared down 81 vibrant years to a workable feature-length play.

The title in part, is taken from a line in William Blake’s poem, “Jerusalem” which Douglas quoted on many occasions.

It reflects that eye of the surrounding storm of lies and corruption, in which Douglas fashioned a socio-economic philosophy of “humanity first” and established the most advanced health care system on the planet…which, callous and cynical governments of this day joyfully dismantle in favour of privatizing and profiteering on the sick, the infirm, the aging and the dying.

TOMMY DOUGLAS:

is an exploration of Douglas’s life, beliefs, passions, battles, dreams and humanitarian accomplishments during 44 years as Premier of

The production addresses the ironies of a man commonly seen as antiquated, who was not only ahead of his own intellectual time, but ahead of this time exactly 100 years after his birth.

It is Douglas at his most humorous,
sincere, eloquent and provocative best.

Saskatchewan and Member of Canada’s Parliament in Ottawa.

This play is a study of a man who, often alone, withstood the full-blown wrath of an ignorant political establishment in love with the feudal system.

There are jokes and anecdotes, speeches and poems, recollections of the past, attention to the present and consideration of the future.

This is Tommy Douglas raw and refined and masterfully unplugged.
